Use airbrush colors to create stunning artworks

Initially, airbrushing was only used to paint cars as the technique ensured an even and glossy color, but over the years artists have also started using it as airbrushing allows you to let your imagination run wild without having to learn all kinds of methods. All you need to create works of art with an airbrush are the right accessories, a steady hand, patience and of course airbrush paint.

At Stelling, we have a wide range of different airbrush colors so you can create your next masterpiece. The most versatile paints are of course acrylics, which are easy to use and can be used on various surfaces such as canvas, plastic and textile. This kind of airbrush paint sprays evenly through an airbrush machine and dries quickly so you don't have to wait long between coats. They can also be used to create transparent effects if you thin the colors correctly.

When it comes to ease of use, watercolor airbrush paints are probably the best bet. They are ideal for creating paintings and illustrations, however, they are lacking when it comes to durability, as they can withstand water and moisture, for example, and they may give a more pigmented result compared to other airbrush paints.

Airbrush paints for miniature figures

You may be familiar with minifigures from Warhammer 40,000 and Dungeons & Dragonswhere you have plenty of options to choose characters to paint yourself. In general, it's recommended to use a dual action airbrush as it's great for creating a good base layer or for priming and detailing. Use an airbrush machine where the nozzle is adjustable or interchangeable so it can be used for a variety of techniques and if you want faster coverage. Using airbrush acrylics to paint your minifigures gives you more control over the mixing of colors, allowing you to create seamless gradients and cool effects. However, this is a painting technique that requires some practice if you're painting very small characters.

If you want to experiment even more with airbrushing, you can also use airbrush paint for 3D artworks, mini terrains and backdrops, as well as model trains and other collectibles that could use a fresh coat of paint.

How to paint with airbrush colors

When it comes to airbrushing, there are four different kinds of base coats. If you're a beginner in the art of airbrushing, we always recommend that you practice a lot before spending a lot of money on extra equipment and many colors.

Before you start, fill your airbrush machine with paint and put on a dust or safety mask so you don't inhale the ozone from the paint. When practicing, it's easiest to start by making dots and circles. To do this, place your airbrush machine about 15 cm from your paper, cardboard or canvas. Be careful how much you press down on the machine, as it's better to start with a light spray so you can slowly build up the color. If you use too much airbrush paint, it will puddle on your favorite surface and run. To make smaller dots, you need to get closer to the surface, however, you should also decrease the amount of air. Once you feel comfortable making circles, you can move on to lines and more complicated strokes and use your airbrush to create realistic shadows.
